Renaissance Bakery & Cafe - Mapo

The entry of foreign big corp spots like McDonalds, Burger King, Costco and the spread of Korean chains like Emart, Paris Baguette and Hansot has changed the market forever in Korea. Local grocers in traditional markets often voice their complaints and have even managed to push through rules on large supermarkets to close at certain hours and at least two Sundays a month. Many mom-and-pop stores and restaurants were driven out of the market due to the bigger chains.

However, one place that withstood the competition, and actually thrived with it, was a bakery called Renaissance Bakery & Café. Established in 1982, Renaissance has grown larger by the year. Currently they have two bakeries just a few minutes’ walk from Mapo station. Having started in a tiny bakery back in 1982, they have now grown and the couple that runs the bakery bought the whole building the bakery is located in to dedicate it all to bread-baking.

The couple’s zeal and love for baking shines through in both the flavor of the pastries but is also evident if you have a conversation with them. The husband has traveled around the world, especially to France and Japan, to study baking techniques. If you visit Renaissance bakery, he will surely be eager to hear your suggestions and comments about the bakery.

The main store is very roomy and can host several groups at the same time. The interior is very quaint with vintage looking furniture juxtaposed with modern lighting. But the spotlight of the bakery is right in the middle of the room, namely the rows upon rows of delicious pastries. One thing that will certainly catch your eye as you enter is the assortment of homemade jams that they sell. Next to regular players like strawberry and apricot we see unique flavors like Earl Grey jam and green tea jam. These jams are the perfect substitute to the Nutella jar that you are probably nibbling on every morning.

Next, your eyes will surely wander to the array of colors of the various tarts. Apple, blueberry almond, strawberry, pecan, pistachio apricot, blueberry cheese…and the list goes on. The base dough is different for every tart to match the filling. Apart from tarts, they have your regular pastries like castella, sponge cake, sweet bean paste pastries and other sweet pastries. Among the latter, make sure not to miss the Mont Blanc, which here is like a big sweet croissant that will crumble in a lovely way all over your arm while you eat it, but oh my is it worth it!

It is evident that the owners have had more than 30 years to perfect their pastries. Every item is a doughy pocket of love and the drinks are just as tasty.

Shooting Guns in South Korea

Shooting Guns in South Korea

Now guns in South Korea are extremely restricted. So people in Korea including foreigners who love guns and like to shoot guns as a hobby find it a bit difficult to practice their favorite hobby. That is why organized shooting ranges are available for those who love shooting guns or even those who know nothing about guns and just want to try it as a new experience, and of course there are those people who do it as a way to relieve their stress. KakaoTalk_20160225_015948502
Enough of the introduction and the talk about gun shootings, and let’s talk about me and my experience at a shooting range in Korea. So I went to Myeongdong, a very well known place among foreigners in Korea, as it has all kinds of stuff ranging from international food markets to traditional Korean markets and so on. Basically, it is a place to find everything you would want, and so you could live for months without even having to go to anywhere else. It even has shooting ranges, what else would you not find?KakaoTalk_20160225_015940286
KakaoTalk_20160223_203328543I went with my friend to the ‘ Korean Shooting Club’. They have so many variety of guns to try out ranging from Desert eagle to Rhino to Walther and so many others, which you can find in a list they give you to check out and choose from for your shooting rounds.KakaoTalk_20160225_015943577KakaoTalk_20160225_015937202
KakaoTalk_20160225_015947743I did two rounds using two different guns, the first one was desert eagle and the second one was…. well I forgot the name actually XD but it looked cool and was a bit heavy.
To be honest, my hands were shaking in the first two shots I shot because I have not shot guns for a long long time but soon I was getting used to it.
KakaoTalk_20160223_202943661I don’t usually brag, but this time I let myself have a whole lot of bragging because I did pretty good specially with the first five shots and got straight 10s, then missed up couple but my score was pretty high, and maybe I should apply to work part time at the shooting range. The staff was very nice and taught us all the safety procedures and at the end gave us two photos of the guns we used.

The “TACO chilichili” Experience

In the middle of a crowded street with full of colors offering a variety of food from all around the world in the Itaewon Area (Seoul-South Korea), you can easily recognize a charming advice screaming “TACO” and is widely known the really good reputation that the Mexican food have all around the world, and here in Korea is not the exception for it.

Immediately once we entered to the restaurant we have been attended by a warm greeting from the owner “Don Kim” which is the Spanish for Mr. Kim, with an incredible Spanish speaking skills he explains about his long and history selling Mexican food in Iteaewon area, plus he is the very pioneer selling this kind of food in South Korea beginning around 15 years ago.

Starting with the explanation about a reckless acceptation for the Mexican food among the locals in Seoul 15 years ago, but it eventually have been changing due the amount of foreigners who are living regularly in Seoul in addition with the globalization concept the Mexican became more and more popular, and now around the area you could find more than 5 restaurants selling Mexican food which talks by itself.

As traditional flavor characteristics for Mexican food is the spicy flavor, and for it the chef should be careful choosing the right ingredients, as well the basic for most all dishes is the tortillas, for both of them Mr. Kim explains that export those ingredients due the relevancy for the flavor in the food, even though the prices are quite affordable and that explains the popularity and recognition that “Taco chilichili” nowadays has in Seoul.

After the quick interview we access to the second floor, where we totally have discovered a Mexican paradise, the place takes cares about all the small details and literally you can feel, smell and taste the Mexican tradition.

Immediately we have been received with a variety selection of Mexican dishes, among them is Enchilladas, a variety of Tacos and specialty Taco al Pastor, Quesadillas, Burritos, Nachos and of course accompanied by the guacamole sauce and tomatillo, all of it in a perfect communion with a Corona Beer, and for the following minutes I have forgot that I living in Korean and I been moved to a Mexican house.

Previously I have tried a couple Mexican places, back home in Ecuador where the Mexican food is highly demand, and in all those places the owner usually were Mexicans, in addition my personal passion for cooking, allow me to discover a bit  about how prepare some Mexican dishes, all of it have provide me a really good reference line and  a good criteria about the Mexican flavors, and being honest the way that Mr. Kim prepare the all those dishes is pretty much as a native cooker, preserving all the flavor, species and colors giving you  a unforgettable Mexican experience in a country so away from it.
